Dionne was born December 12, 1940 and grew up in Newark, New Jersey in the USA. Her father had worked as a gospel record promoter at Chess Records and her mother managed a successful gospel group called The Drinkard Singers so, it was inevitable that young Dionne would begin her singing career performing gospel in the choir at The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. Her first TV appearances were in the mid 50’s performing on New Jersey & New York TV with The Drinkard Singers.
